The Maritime Services Division recently hosted a National Workshop on Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) Spill Contingency Planning and Response from February 23–25, 2026, at the Ministry’s Head Office. Facilitated by experts from the International Maritime Organization, the workshop brought together key stakeholders from across the maritime sector, including representatives from government agencies and industry partners. The sessions focused on strengthening national frameworks for responding to hazardous and noxious substance spills, improving coordination, and building technical capacity to effectively manage chemical incidents in the marine environment.
This initiative plays an important role in enhancing Trinidad and Tobago’s maritime preparedness and protecting its coastal and marine ecosystems. By equipping agencies with the knowledge, strategies, and collaborative mechanisms needed to respond to potential HNS incidents, the workshop supports safer shipping operations and stronger environmental safeguards. Continued capacity-building efforts such as this help ensure the country remains well-prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to maritime emergencies while safeguarding the livelihoods and communities that depend on the sea.
