Driving Permit Applications and Renewals


Applying for a Provisional Driving Permit

 

The following items are required for lawful application of a provisional driving permit within Trinidad & Tobago:

  1. One (1) form of national identification – Electoral Identification Card and Birth Certificate together or solely a valid Passport
  2. Four (4) passport size photographs with green background (full frontal view of the face ears in viewing). The photographs of the applicant should not be taken more than six (6) months before the date of the submission of the application.

Applications for Class 2 – Wheel Tractor machines: applicants must complete a Form of Medical Certificate No. 12 with their application to certify their health and competence to operate the desired class of vehicle they are applying to drive. Applicants must produce a recent passport size photograph along with their application.

An Affidavit or Deed Poll is required for a driving permit application in the event the applicant’s name on the Birth Certificate and other documents differ.

Once a driving permit applicant has provided the required documentation, he/she must undertake a vision test. Upon passing the vision test, a knowledge/ regulations test will be appointed. After passing regulations, the applicant will be issued a date for driving test. Upon passing the driving test, the applicant will be issued a Driver’s Permit and a Certificate of Competence.

To file an application for a provisional driving permit, applications are expected to pay the following related costs:

Applicants who have failed either the Knowledge or Driving Test and wish to apply for re-examination are required to pay an additional $175.00 to re-sit the exam.

Renewing your Driving Permit

Motorists are urged and expected to be compliant and aware of their driving permit’s expiration date. The Ministry of Works and Transport advises that driving with an expired driving permit is a serious traffic offense.

The public is advised that applications for the renewal of a driving permit will not be entertained earlier than one month before its expiration date. If a Trinidad & Tobago national is leaving the country, and holds a valid driving permit, they can file an application for renewal no earlier than six (6) months from the date of expiry. In such instances, relevant travel documents (passport and travel itinerary) may also be required to show just evidence of their intended departure.

  • UNDER SIXTY-FIVE (65) YEARS
  • WITHIN (5) FIVE YEARS OF SIXTY-FIVE (65) YEARS
  • SIXTY-FIVE (65) YEARS AND OVER

To apply for renewal of a driving permit for a five (5) year period, driving permit holders must produce the following:

  1. A completed Application Form No. 4, provided by Licensing Authority;
  2. Their current Driver’s Permit due for expiration;
  3. A completed Form No. 12 “Medical test for Driver’s Permit” when the applicant possesses a driving permit under any of the following classes 2,4,5,6 and 7 only (not for class 1 or 3). A recent passport size photograph must be attached to the Medical Form .12 for the application for renewal.
  4. A Taxi Driver’s Badge and Licence if applicable.

Renewal of Driver's Permit for Ten (10) years

Motorists, under the age of fifty-six (56) wishing to renew their driving permit for a period of ten (10) years are required by law to produce the following documents:

  1. Completed Form No. 4, accessed and provided by Licensing Authority
  2. Their current Driving Permit;
  3. A Completed Form No. 12 – Medical Test for a Driver’s Permit when the applicant possesses any of the following classes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 or class 3 or;
  4. Taxi Driver’s Badge and Licence if applicable

The cost of renewal of a Driving Permit for Ten (10) years is $1,000.00. However, it should be noted that there are no provisions for renewal of a Driver’s Permit for Ten (10) years where it has expired for more than six (6) months, three (3) years or five (5) years.

Accordingly, persons wishing to renew their driver’s permits that have expired in accordance with the above paragraph will be renewed in accordance with section (61) (A) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act or amended by Act No. 5 of 2010 for a period of five (5) years.

However, this does not apply to an applicant whose permit has expired for over (5) years and is required to be retested. That person has the option to renew for either Five (5) or Ten (10) years, once successfully passing their regulations and driving exam.
