The Guayaguayare Coastal Protection Works, led by the Ministry’s Coastal Protection Unit, is transforming one of Trinidad’s most vulnerable shorelines into a stronger, safer, and more resilient coastline.
The scope of work of this project includes:
- Placement of 566 metres of large interlocking armour stones to reduce erosion,
- Reinforcement of 48 metres of an existing wall with a deep foundation,
- Construction of a 15-metre concrete seawall,
- Addition of new public amenities such as a boardwalk, stairs, seating, improved drainage, parking, and landscaping.
These significant upgrades are designed to protect vital infrastructure, including roadways, nearby properties, and national energy facilities, while also improving public access and safety along the coastline. Beyond structural protection, this initiative is set to deliver long-term environmental and social benefits for the Guayaguayare community. By reducing coastal erosion and improving drainage, the works help preserve the natural shoreline, safeguard marine ecosystems, and support sustainable livelihoods for residents and fisherfolk. The enhanced waterfront spaces will also encourage recreation, tourism, and community gatherings, ensuring that Guayaguayare continues to thrive as both a cultural and economic hub along Trinidad’s southeastern coast.
