Coastal Protection Works in Matelot
Coastal Protection Works in Matelot
Major coastal protection works are now in progress along the Paria Main Road in Matelot, as the Coastal Protection Unit (CPU) moves to safeguard the North Coast from severe erosion. This project covers nearly half a kilometre of coastline and includes the construction of a new seawall, the placement of large boulders to help break strong waves, and measures to stabilise the slope and improve drainage in the area. Once completed, these works will help protect the road, surrounding land, and nearby communities, ensuring this important coastal route remains safe and accessible for years to come.
Beyond protecting the roadway, the initiative is a lifeline for the many coastal communities that depend on this corridor. Residents of Toco, Sans Souci, Monte Video, Grand Riviere, and Matelot, over 7,000 people in total, will benefit from improved safety, preserved access, and a stronger defence against the encroaching sea. By reinforcing the shoreline, the project not only protects infrastructure but also safeguards homes, livelihoods, and the future of Trinidad’s northernmost communities.
