THE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT BRANCH
STRATEGIC MEASURES TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY
The Ministry of Works and Transport remains active in the execution of several strategic measures to improve road safety, in the areas of legislative reform, other targeted safety measures on the road and continuous public education. These ground breaking laws that will introduce new systems such as:-

• Revision of the existing Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act


• The Demerit Points System (For every traffic violation demerit points will be assigned to one’s driver’s permit to suspend the driving permit of a regularly errant driver.)


• Reform of the Fixed Penalty Traffic Ticketing System


• An increase of the speed limit from 80 km/h to 100km/h


• 40 back-up power supply stations for traffic signalized intersections


• 35 Red Light Cameras

• The Provision of road studs on highways and main roads


• The increased road markings on the highways and shoulders

• The improvement of areas defined as “Black spots” and the use of more “Caution” signs

• Monitoring of the road surface on highways and roadways


• Spot Speed Camera Enforcement System


• 15 LIDAR speed measuring devices


• The upgrade of obsolete traffic equipment


• The implementation of 25 zebra crossings


• The use of the Barrier Systems


• The continuous inspection of roads and road conditions

• Collaboration with public utilities stakeholders


• Reforming the Regulations System by digitized process


• The deployment of Traffic Wardens and Motor Vehicle Officers on the nation’s roads and Highways to enforce the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act Chapter 48:50


• The implementation of MOWT’s Outreach Engagement Strategy: The delivery of public education lessons/ sessions on road safety and motor vehicle safety at schools, private companies and government institutions by Traffic Wardens and Motor Vehicle Officers (Licensing Officers)


• Public awareness and educational features on the MOWT’s social media pages
